Do Workfare Participants Recover Quickly from Retrenchment?

چکیده
The incomes of continuing participants in a workfare program in Argentina are compared to those of a matched comparison group of non-participants and with a matched group of past participants who leave the program. We find partial income replacement, amounting to one-quarter of the gross workfare wage within six months of leaving the program, rising to one half in 12 months. The estimates are unbiased in the presence of a timeinvariant errors due to miss-matching. Fully removing selection bias would probably yield lower income replacement. Test results based on a second follow-up survey suggest that valid inferences can be drawn about program impacts from our measures of income replacement.

The subjective well-being of workfare participants: Insights from a Day Reconstruction Survey
In this paper, we shed more light on the subjective well-being of workfare participants and compare it to the well-being of unemployed and employed workers. We use data from a selfconducted survey among participants in workfare schemes in Germany. We examine two subdimensions of subjective well-being – life satisfaction and emotional well-being – separately to obtain a more comprehensive view o...

In two experiments, participants judged the fairness of different distributions of wealth in hypothetical societies. In the first study, the level of meritocracy in the hypothetical societies and the frame of reference from which participants judged alternative distributions of wealth interacted to influence fairness judgments. As meritocracy increased, all participants became more tolerant of ...

Randomly sampled workfare participants in a welfare-dependent region of Argentina were given a voucher that entitled an employer to a sizable wage subsidy. A second sample also received the option of skill training while a third sample formed the control group. Double-difference and instrumentalvariables methods were used to deal with potential experimental biases, including selective complianc...

متن کاملAssessing the Poverty Impact of an Assigned Program
Some public programs are assigned more-or-less exclusively to certain observational units. These may be people, households, villages or larger geographic areas. The key thing is that some units get the program and some do not. This chapter reviews tools that can help assess the impacts of such a program, judged against its agreed objectives. The following are examples of the types of programs t...
